Passy-Muir
Tracheostomy and ventilator speaking valves
Passy-Muir
Speaking Valves are the ultimate in Tracheostomy speaking valves,
providing many clinical benefits due to their unique no-leak design. We
offer several types of Passy-Muir Valve to enable the medical team to
offer the best suitable solution for the individual.
We have available for further reading and reference, an excellent Passy-Muir clinical pack which we recommend to members of the Healthcare team. This comprehensive guide clearly highlights the benefits of the valves and illustrates many aspects of the management of Tracheostomised patients (Adult as well as Paediatric.)
Positive Closure – a patented closed position “No Leak” design
The “No Leak” design of the Passy-Muir Valves (PMVs) means that the valve is always in a closed position until the patient inhales. The valve opens easily with less than normal inspiratory pressures and closes automatically at the end of the inspiratory cycle without air leak and without patient expiratory effort.
Closed System
Unlike open position speaking valves, the closed position of the PMV allows the patient to creates a positive airway pressure and restores the patient to a more normal “closed respiratory system.” The “closed system” also creates a protective column of air in the tracheostomy tube which resists secretions from moving up the tube and occluding the valve. Instead, secretions may be coughed up around the tube and expectorated or suctioned from the mouth.
The ONLY Speaking Valves offering ALL of the following uses:
- Communication
- Improves Swallow
- May Reduce Aspiration
- Ventilator Application
- Facilitates Secretion Management
- Improves Oxygenation
- Improves Olfaction
- Expedites Weaning and Decannulation
- Restores Positive Airway Pressure
- Interchangeability Between Tracheostomy and Ventilator Use
- Facilitates Infection Control
All Passy-Muir Valves (PMV)
Have a closed position “No Leak” design that restores a closed respiratory system.
PMV Closed Position “No Leak” Design
Maintains a column of air in the tracheostomy tube and redirects airflow and secretions up the trachea.
All Other Speaking Valves
Have an open position design that causes air leakage during exhalation.
The only Speaking Valve that can be
used interchangeably on or off the ventilator for Paediatrics and Adults
(with appropriate ventilator tubing).
The PMVs offer
ventilator dependent patients the opportunity to speak uninterrupted
without having to wait for the ventilator to cycle, and without being
limited to a few words at a time due to loss of air through the
tracheostomy tube as experienced by patients using “leak speech.”
Order Information
PMV 007 (Aqua) Tracheostomy and Ventilator Speaking Valve(15mm I.D. / 22mm O.D.) is designed to fit inside adult disposable ventilator tubing. The bright colour makes it easier to see while in the ventilator tubing. Use of an adaptor may be needed to adapt the PMV to paediatric or various closed suction systems. Order number: TR PMV 0002 |

PMV 2000 (Clear) Low Profile - Lower Resistance Tracheostomy Valve(15mm I.D. / 23mm O.D.) is lightweight and smaller than the original PMVs. It is designed to be clear and less visible for the more ambulatory patient.Order number: TR PMV 1002 |

PMV 2001 (Purple) Low Profile - Lower Resistance Tracheostomy Speaking Valve(15mm I.D. / 23mm O.D.) is identical to the PMV 2000, except for its colour. This valve is bright purple to facilitate staff awareness and monitoring of patients while using the PMVOrder number: TR PMV 1003 |

PMA 2000 Oxygen Adapter on the PMV 2001 (Purple)The Passy-Muir PMA 2000 Oxygen Adapter is small, lightweight, clear in color and easily snaps onto the PMV™ 2000 (Clear) and PMV 2001 (Purple colored™) Valves. The PMA 2000 allows for easy delivery of supplemental low flow oxygen (<6L/min) and humidity. Patients can improve their mobility and comfort by utilizing the PMA 2000 with oxygen tubing and a small portable oxygen tank, eliminating the need for bulky aerosol tubing. When using the PMA 2000, oxygen is delivered in front of the diaphragm of the PMV. This reduces complications associated with devices that provide continuous flow behind the diaphragm of a speaking valve, which may include air trapping, drying of secretions and possible cilia damage.Order number: TR PMV 1004 |

Passy-Muir Valve O2 Adapter (PMA 2000)Allows for easy inhalation of low-flow supplemental oxygen and humidity through the Low Profile - Resistance PMV 2000 Series Valves. The Passy Muir Valve O2 Adapter is small, lightwieght, clear in colour and snaps onto both the PMV 2000 (Clear) and PMV 2001 (Purple) Tracheostomy and Ventilator Speaking Valves and is easily removed when not in use.Oxygen is delivered in front of the diaphragm of the PMV to avoid complications associated with devices that provide continuous flow behind the diaphragm of a speaking valve which may include air trapping, drying of secretions and possible cilia damage. Order Number: TR PMV 1005 |
